inaugural 10k super bowl run!

I did something today that I have never done before.  I competed in a 10k race.  I can’t really remember why I signed up.  I guess I thought it would be something to check off my “to do” or “accomplishments” list.  I had no aspirations to win, my goal was to do it in less than an hour.  I finished in 57:04.  Which is pretty good considering I forgot that 10k is 6.2 miles and not just 6 miles.

Upped the pace for the last 100 meters

Part of the fun was running with my brother Richie and  his wife Misty

    The Blacks

and a gang of Elk Grove Policemen (and women).

    Elk Grove PD

They were a great group of people who really like to have fun.  And they served as motivation for me since I was representing them with an EG Police shirt.

Making sure my number was straight

Jada was there for moral support!

I was so excited that my wife Jada got up early with me and came to the course to cheer us on.  She initially wanted to run with us, but missed the cut-off to register.  After feeling how cold it was, she was ok with that.

    Richie and Misty

We were all proud of Misty who has never been a runner, an has only recently decided to run this race with us.  She completed the whole thing and wasn’t the last one to finish!

We wrapped up the day with a great Super Bowl Party and Misty and Richie’s house.  Met alot of great new friends and had some great food.  Can’t wait for next year to try it again!

    you make me smile

Brent and Summer came to me to create a family portrait on film.  Capturing a day of fun with their son Jakob.  They planned to début their video on Thanksgiving to their whole family who had not been together for a while.  I came up with the idea to announce to the family the secret fact that they were expecting child number 2.  We traveled to San Francisco and had a great day exploring the city.

I loved making this film.  It all seemed to come together when I finally found a song that captured the feeling I was trying to convey.  The family was surprised on  Thanksgiving 2009, and we just found out they are having a girl.  Congratulations Brent and Summer.  Thank You for a fun day!

Wow, this is so amazing! I like the one you did for your own family too. This will be something they will treasure forever. I love the use of music with it, good song choice. The filming is such good quality. We may need to fly you to Nebraska someday to make them for my family!

    don’t miss out!

I ran across this article on one of the blogs i read and really agree with it and have found it is so true

One thing I always encourage my couples to remember is to not skip out on doing an engagement session.  I know that sometimes people don’t see the point of it, don’t have the time, or would just rather save the $500 or so from adding it in their photo package.  But trust me . . . engagement sessions are worth more than you think!

    When I refer my couples to photographers, I always tell them 2 things;

1-    I have a huge list of photographer favorites, which always seems to grow as I meet and work with the many amazing photographers that California is blessed with!

2-    I won’t refer anyone who I do not absolutely love . . . but I can’t tell you who is the best person for you , it’s up to you to meet with the photographers I recommend (that fit your budget & style) because I want you to fall in love with the best one for you!

Part of the reason I ant my couples to fall in love with their photographer is because this person will be an part of your wedding day.  They will be capturing images of you for 8+ hours and you want to love not only their work. . . but love them.  You just can’t expect to meet them once, hire them, and then have them show up on your wedding day and make magic.  This relationship needs to have some growth to it.

(insert engagement session) now you have a coup;le hours to get to know your photographer, their shooting style, and they get to know you and how to bring the most out of you in your photos.  This will also make sure on the wedding day you have gotten used to a camera in your face all day, and don’t end up looking like a deer caught in headlights . . . yes I have seen it happen folks! You will also get some wonderful images which will definitely give you much anticipation for working with them again on the big day .. .  after all, that’s when It really counts!

One thing to remember is that your engagement session should be a fun time for th both of you.  So rock out your “American’s next top model” self, be silly, be stylish, even bring along fun props if you so feel inclined . . . the main thing is to be you!

    que sera

Since this is one of my favorite films I have ever made, I thought It perfect as the first video I post on my blog.

September 11, 2009 marked the 3 year anniversary of Jada and I adopting Micah our precious daughter.  I made this film to surprise Jada and as a reminder of how special Micah is to us and always will be.  But most of all I want Micah to watch this and know that she has a father that loves her more than anything.

wow ryan…i’m all sorts of teary… that was precious. i just wanna give your whole beautiful family a hug 🙂

    a new beginning

I have been shooting and producing videos for quite a few years with several attempts at trying to make a profit from this amazing hobby.  It almost always seemed like I was just dabbling in the video business, never really committing or more accurately not really knowing what to do next.

In October 2009, I attended a game changing seminar called ReFrame San Francisco.  There I met some of my idols in the video world (Philip Bloom, Joe Simon) and met some great new friends (David Ethridge, Johnathan Metcalf) who have developed into mentors for my new venture.  I learned so much from all of the workshops and left inspired to dive into the Wedding Filmmaking Industry.  I had shot weddings in the past, and loved it when I had the freedom to turn a wedding film into a creative work of art rather than a simple documentation of an event that had occurred.

Now I am amping up for all aspects of building a solid video/film business.  Web site, blog, meeting clients, contracts, logo, business cards.  They are all flying at me as you can tell because the list seems to be way out of order.  With the help from my beautiful wife Jada we are going to have the most awesome, cutting edge, creative business.

I almost forgot,  the name of our new business is RyanBlackFilms.  Keep an eye on this blog and I will post some of my work for you to enjoy.  And feel free to comment or se
